English as an Additional Language Support

Our EAL department provides specialist academic support to all international students. Once you have enrolled your English language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing will be tested and based on your results an individual programme will be carefully designed for you and delivered across lessons throughout the week.

For those that require it, we will create a tailored programme that will help you gain the confidence and skills needed to study in school and communicate effectively in daily life. Our EAL classes are purposely kept small to ensure you have the individual attention and support you require. Once your level of English is strong enough to forego EAL lessons you will then concentrate on mainstream curriculum English Language and English Literature. When you reach the appropriate level you will be entered for IELTS or one of the University of Cambridge English language examinations which are recognised throughout the world.

What is there to do in Denbigh?

Denbigh lies at the heart of North Wales, overlooking the stunning Vale of Clwyd, one of only four Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Wales. It is also in close proximity to Snowdonia National Park. It is where nature and history come together in a fascinating environment, it is surprising and captivating, quirky and hospitable. The Denbigh character is described as strong, lively, independent of spirit, but also open, friendly and welcoming – something that Myddelton College inspire to create within our college community.

With its secret gardens and more listed buildings than any other town in Wales, Denbigh looks different from everywhere else – it has largely escaped the generic chain style shopping experience which dominates much of the UK of today – the independent shops, cafés & restaurants, busy old town square and museums are truly unique. However, the town still benefits from amenities such as a leisure centre, library & supermarkets. There is always something going on in Denbigh from music & arts festivals to markets and even an annual Boxing Day barrel-rolling competition in the town square.

What activities are available for boarders at the weekend?

On a Saturday, the boarding staff regularly organise a trip that all boarding pupils are welcome to attend. Visits will try and encourage the students to try something different, whether that be learning about a different culture or trying zip-lining for the first time! We want to put together a trips programme that is varied, interesting and gives you the opportunity to explore all the different cultures that the UK has to offer.

Our trip programmes tend to include trips to cities including Manchester, Liverpool and Chester. Manchester and Liverpool are home to a number of excellent museums and galleries, as well as shopping centres and Premier League football teams for those interested in sports. Chester has the world-famous Chester Zoo, rated as the best Zoo in the UK by TripAdvisor. There is also Chester Cathedral, river boat tours, and plenty of museums and shopping options. Closer to home, there are cinemas, a ski and snowboarding centre, 10 pin bowling, a Seaquarium Centre, sandy beaches with arcades on the promenade and much more!

Visit our boarding page for more info.
